Starters are microbes, and they must be alive.

When a company markets a bacteria-based product and does not indicate its CFU (Colony Forming Units), we cannot know the status of these bacteria, and even a product with large quantities (mg) may not have any live microorganisms.

This is because the colonisation capacity of the ferments is measured in a unit of activity, not mass, therefore Jäger et al. (2019) references from the field of study of these products indicate that:
