Recommendations for taking energy gels correctly

HSN recommends that you always take an energy gel with water, as long as it is not Hydro. Water will help its texture to dilute better. However, when you use Evoenergy Hydrogel, you don't need to dilute it, as its texture is already highly fluid.

A very practical trick used by many cyclists and runners is to dissolve it in a sports bottle or isothermal water bottle and take it little by little at your own pace.

With the new reformulation of the gels we have made in 2024, all HSN sports gels are lighter and easier to take than the first original version of Evoenergy Gel.

What are the properties of energy gels?

Gels are composed of a powerful energy source such as carbohydrates, which are used during physical effort to ensure sustained performance. They contain sodium to compensate for losses through perspiration.

In general terms, they provide energy substrate and elements lost during physical exercise that can help maintain athletic performance in long duration and/or high intensity efforts.

  • Carbohydrate solutions contribute to the improvement of physical performance during high-intensity and long-lasting physical exercise in trained adults, when consumed under certain conditions. Only trained adults who perform high-intensity exercise (at least 65% of VO2max) and long-duration exercise (at least 60 minutes) will feel the effects.
  • Caffeine contributes to the reduction of perceived exertion during physical exercise. It should be consumed in doses of 4mg/kg body weight one hour before physical exercise.

We recommend taking an energy gel during the activity with water, approximately 45 minutes after starting. However, it’s worth noting that this is a rough guide as it depends on many factors, including the type of sport, the intensity, and the physical condition of the athlete.

A gel for cyclists and runners can take between 5 and 10 minutes to take effect, although it depends on the body of each person.

You should have realistic expectations and be aware that an energy gel isn’t a magic wand that will have an instant and immediate effect, despite its easy absorption.

For events lasting up to 2.5 hours, it is sufficient to take one serving of standard or hydro gels containing around 30g of carbohydrates, and for events exceeding this time, you can take a serving every 45-60 minutes, or use the maxi versions of the gels for a higher intake.
