Today we’re going to tackle a topic a bit different from what we usually do, here’s my reflection on Fitness nowadays.

Select the info
We live in the best time in history when it comes to information.
You just have to open an app on your phone and you get access to hundreds of videos, articles, and infographics on any topic, fitness and nutrition included.
So much so that we’ve gotten lazy, we don’t want to do our own research and fact-checking, there’s so much info that we hide behind “I don’t know who to trust,” even when it’s something as important as your nutrition and training, something that will help you for life.
And I get it, it’s way easier to write to the person you follow on social media and try to get an answer to your specific question.
The problem is that in most cases it’s impossible to answer that question; like:
Ángel, what should I eat to gain muscle or lose fat?
It’s just one example of the hundreds of questions I get, I love helping but it’s impossible to answer such a complete and individual question.

Try it out, type on Youtube or Google, how to create my own diet/routine?
And you’ll see hundreds of results, many of great quality and totally free.
Get out of your comfort zone
In the information age, we’ve stayed behind the barrier, using not knowing enough as an excuse, you stay in your comfort zone.
- Don’t start executing;
- Don’t start that routine because “what if it’s not the best?”;
- Don’t start the diet because you don’t know about nutrition;
- Don’t start until you have the perfect plan;
- Never start because the perfect plan doesn’t exist.
There’s no equation that tells you how many sets you should do at the gym, nor a magic rep range that will make you gain muscle…

Trial and error
Do you know what anyone with good muscle mass or strength development will tell you?
They’ll tell you all the times they messed up when they started and share funny stories about the false myths they fell for.
But that person one day started getting feedback and data to work from, that’s all you need…
- How do you know the perfect calories? Trial and error;
- How do you know how much training volume you tolerate? Trial and error;
- How do you know how many days to train? Trial and error;
Everything’s already invented
People who share info on social media are passionate about this and you can see us excited about the latest studies, trends, and advanced methods.
But that’s just the tip of the iceberg, the basics and what will really make you progress are already more than invented.
“…don’t let the trees stop you from seeing the forest…”
Want to gain muscle mass?
- You need enough calories and protein;
- Create an energy surplus;
- Train with intensity and enjoy your routine;
- Keep track of your measurements;
- Get good sleep at night and have lots of patience.
Want to lose fat?
- You need an adequate amount of calories and protein;
- Create an energy deficit;
- Train with intensity and enjoy your routine;
- Stay active daily;
- Get good sleep at night and add cardio as an extra tool.
These basics can be learned in a few weeks if you put in the effort, in fact, many of you probably already know these basics.

It’s not that simple
I’ve barely touched on the basics of training and nutrition, there are hundreds of nuances, details, and areas to explore…
Ignore others’ opinions
In my job as a personal trainer, I often make the difference more as a “psychologist” than as the trainer itself.
I can give you a good routine or a good diet, but usually the barrier is psychological and that’s what I try to teach those who work with me, I try to help them overcome that barrier, created by themselves.
- I tell you the basics of a bulking phase… if you’re going to throw it all away because in 2 months you have a barbecue with friends and want to cut too early.
- I give you a routine on Youtube… if you’re afraid to be the only woman training hard at the gym or don’t want to go to the weight room.
- I teach you to count calories… if you’re going to overdo it on alcohol every weekend because that’s what your so-called friends value about you.
- I make you a cutting plan… if your partner “forces” you to skip the diet every 3 days and points a gun at you to order starter, main, and dessert.
Break your limits
Most of these barriers are self-imposed.
Your friends don’t give a damn if you have abs at the barbecue, it’s your own insecurity talking.
Sure, there’s some idiot in the weight room who looks like he’s never seen a woman before, but you shouldn’t let that limit your full potential and your health.
No one forces you to drink every weekend or demolish the buffet, but maybe you use that excuse of external pressure to do what you really wanted: demolish the buffet.
Experience counts
I’m not better than you…
I’ve been through all these things and worse, I’m not here to lecture, I’ve made most of the mistakes and will keep making others, but if my experience helps others avoid the same pitfalls, I’ll do whatever I can.
