Weight loss supplements
Caffeine
It is the main ingredient of fat-burning supplements
It is an alkaloid that belongs to the xanthins group. It is present in several foods like coffee, tea or mate, theobromine and/or guarana. It has the ability to inhibit two enzymes, the catel-O-methyl-transferase and phosphodiesterase, which results in the stimulation of the lipolysis (breakdown of fats). It will also increase the metabolic rate thanks to its thermogenic effects.
Caffeine also has a diuretic effect, which means that it also helps to prevent liquid retention.
On the other hand, it stimulates the nervous system, which can lead to a state of focus that will help us complete certain tasks, either cognitive or physical.
Green tea
Green tea is a rich source of polyphenols, which is why we can benefit from its antioxidant effect
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the most active form of catechins which are the elements from green tea that have the antioxidant power, the anti-inflammatory properties and metabolic effects which are associated with fat loss.
EGCG inhibits the enzyme that breaks down the hormone norepinephrine. This results in a higher concentration of this catecholamine.
The function of said hormone consists of signalling fat cells so that they are metabolized and discharged on the bloodstream for their oxidation later on. That is why the calorie expenditure increases, even while resting
Chromium picolinate
It helps to regulate the blood sugar and it is involved in the metabolism of the following macronutrients: (proteins, fats and carbs).
Chromium picolinate can calm the craving for sugar and eating between meals, since it has a better control on insulin. That is why it has an effect associated with appetite control and increased satiety, which will reduce the extra intake of calories coming from said snacks and supporting our weight loss plan.
Coleus forskohlii
It belongs to the family of mint (its scientific name is Plectranthus Barbatus). It has been traditionally used in ayurvedic medicine, but in recent years, this supplement has been used to support weight loss.
The active ingredient forskolin increase an enzyme called cyclase adenylate, which in turn increases the levels of another enzyme called Cyclic adenosine monophosphate, which works as a metabolic regulator:
cAMP stimulates the lipase enzyme that is sensitive to hormones and the thyroid gland.
Green Coffee Extract
Chlorogenic acid is a phytochemical present in Green Coffee (Coffea canephora robusta)
Some of its functions are participating and regulating the metabolism of glucose and fats. Here lies its ability to reduce the absorption of carbohydrates that we eat, which would help to mitigate the insulin peaks.
The clinical studies suggest that using chlorogenic acid as part of a healthy diet can help to keep the blood glucose levels under control. Its role in supporting fat loss is due to the fact that it can improve the function of adiponectin.
Raspberry ketones
Raspberry Ketones are a phenolic compound that is responsible for the incredible smell of raspberry. It has become a powerful supplement to stimulate fat loss through several processes.
First of all, it has a thermogenic effect (similar to the one caused by synephrine and capsaicin) and through which the <strong”metabolism is activated”, producing an increase in the body temperature. On the other hand, it increases the adiponectin levels, which is a hormone that regulates metabolic processes and which is release by the adipose tissue itself.
It can be a tool to combat type II diabetes and the accumulation of arterial plaque.
Synephrine or bitter orange
Bitter orange is the extract from the unripe fruit of the Citrus aurantium plant
Bitter orange helps to reduce and control the appetite, so that it helps to consume less calories on a daily basis. This is what is known as an “appetite suppressant“. It is also a powerful thermogenic agent and it has the ability to increase the metabolic rate.
The two active ingredients from said plant (synephrine and octopamine) are structurally similar to the ones present in ephedra.
Bitter orange is a very controversial supplement to lose wight. There are some scientific tests that have proven that the ingredients found in bitter orange can support weight loss, but their safety is questionable. However, the doses administered in supplements to lose weight are controlled, and we should not run any risk by using the product properly.
Carnitine
There are several carnitine forms, such as ALCAR (cognitive support) or carnitine base (used during cutting phase)
Carnitine is a powerful fat transporter, that is, it contributes to taking the fatty acids to the cell mitochondria, where they will be burnt, producing energy.
Carnitine does not have a stimulating effect, which is why it can be used by most of the population. It is advisable to take it before starting a physical activity.
African Mango
The African mango (Irvingia Gabonensis) seed extract has a high fiber content that allows you to control your appetite so that you will not have to eat between meals.
Thanks to this, we will be able to keep proper levels of the hormones leptin and adiponectin, which are in charge of regulating the feeling of hunger and satiety.
An interesting property of African Mango is regulating the blood glucose.
It can also regulate the expression of the PPAR protein (related to weight gain), reducing its levels as well as those of adiponectin, which is involved in the metabolism of fats and the control of glucose.
Garcinia cambogia
It is a source of hydroxicitric acid (HCA), which has properties to lose weight without stimulating the nervous system.
The theory behind the garcinia cambogia extract is that the HCA can inhibit the enzyme ATP citrate lyase, which is a catalyst for the conversion of citrate and coenzyme A in oxalacetate and acetyl coenzyme A (acetyl-CoA), which are basic components for the synthesis of fatty acids and cholesterol.
