Important! No added amino acids - Real protein content

For decades, amino acids have been added to proteins, a practice known as 'amino-spiking', promoted by American companies with a strong marketing focus, but this practice is not recommended, except in specific cases.

A WPC contains between 40 and 80% protein, depending on how the protein is filtered and for what purpose it is to be used. The most common for instant use in food, as a protein powder, is 80% protein.

If you find a protein powder that is whey protein concentrate (Whey) with 90% protein and you are told that it is not isolated (iso), this protein value is not real, but is due to the addition of nitrogenous compounds to the protein.

A whey protein, like Evowhey, needs no added amino acids, as it is complete in itself. That's why we bring it to you like this, a quality protein, as it should be.

Around 80% protein - Pure raw material with a high protein content

The protein content of Evowhey Protein is 80% of its composition.

Its proteins have been structurally cared for by using only first-rate European raw materials for the development of our proteins. This guarantees a protein filtering and atomisation process that respects the natural protein structures of the whey.

The protein presented as unflavoured raw material is pure, containing no additives other than lecithin which allows for instant mixing (this is explained later).

If you're wondering... So why is my protein 77g and not 80g?

The WPC we use is 80% protein, the highest reference value for a whey concentrate. However, when flavours are developed the protein contribution decreases a little, because the flavourings, colourings, sweeteners, and ingredients that allow you to enjoy the delicious options of Evowhey Protein take up space, that space is what subtracts protein.

The variations are so minor that our nutritionists recommend not choosing the flavour of protein by its protein content, but instead focusing on which flavour you will enjoy the most, as the difference between 77g and 80g of protein is barely 1g per shake.

The difference between a flavour with 77g of protein and the double chocolate with 66g is already more significant, however, if you enjoy the double chocolate flavour, simply by adding a little more protein to your shake, you reach the equivalent intake of any other flavour, so don't stop enjoying your favourite flavour for it.

High biological value and benchmark PDCAAs, what does this mean?

The Biological Value of a protein, and its PDCAAs (protein digestibility corrected amino acid score), are two markers of protein quality.

Biological value measures protein quality by calculating the nitrogen used for tissue formation divided by the nitrogen absorbed from food. Biological value provides a measure of how efficiently the body uses the protein consumed in the diet.

Whereas PDCAAs express the content of the first limiting essential amino acid of the test protein as a percentage of the content of the same amino acid in a reference standard of essential amino acids (FAO/WHO, 1990). This method has been adopted as the preferred method for measuring protein value in human nutrition.

Complete aminogram: High in natural BCAAs and Glutamine

The aminogram, a piece of information that is not mandatory to provide, is the measurement of the amount of amino acids in a protein. As you may know, in the usual high-protein foods (such as chicken, fish or eggs) the aminogram is not reflected.

However, in protein powders it is established practice for transparency to indicate the proportion of amino acids contained in a protein. At HSN we follow this practice in a fully transparent manner. Other companies use an average aminogram, obtained from a reference table of values for 'Whey Protein Concentrate' and use it in their proteins without further ado. This is a permitted practice but in our opinion it is not very transparent due to its inaccuracy.

So if it had no added amino acids, why does it have an aminogram?

Proteins are naturally composed of amino acids. Adding amino acids to 'falsely' increase the protein content of a protein powder is not the same as reflecting the amino acids naturally contained in a protein. As long as they are not added, the fact that the value of certain amino acids is as high as possible is a good thing.

For example, BCAAs:

Evowhey protein contains up to 5.5g of BCAAs in every 30g of powder (average amount used to prepare a shake).

This same amount provides up to 4 grams of glutamine.

These amino acids are important for human nutrition, and are highly valued as part of a quality protein, provided, we insist, that they are not added, but are amino acids naturally present in the protein.

Evowhey Protein is a protein for volume, definition and maintenance

A common question when choosing a protein is whether it is suitable or the best choice for a particular purpose. However, from a nutritional perspective, one protein powder is no more suitable than another for different goals.

Proteins, as long as they are complete and of good quality, share the same properties, i.e. a milk protein has no different effect than a soy protein, so why do people think so?

Because traditional foods can be chosen in this way: An egg white provides protein with very low values of other nutrients such as fats or carbohydrates, while a legume provides protein, but its carbohydrate values are very high. The same is true of red meat, but instead of carbohydrates, it provides a lot of fat. This makes certain foods unsuitable for periods of calorie restriction as they are high in calories.

Protein consumption around training provides additional nutritional benefits over its use at other times of the day, according to studies by Schoenfeld et al.

However, Evowhey is perfect as a fast-breaking protein, as well as to supplement the protein ration of a meal with insufficient protein intake, for example:

If you take a few nuts and a piece of fruit to work, that meal is pretty low in protein; even if you take a sandwich with you, the protein intake is pretty low.... Evowhey is an optimal choice to increase the protein portion of that meal, in a convenient and delicious way.

Our recommendation: Try flavours in 500g formats before making 2kg purchases. Buy the larger sizes when you already know what flavour you like. We answer frequently asked questions

How much Evowhey can I take per shake? And per day?

A common question we have received over the years is how much protein to take in general.

However, this question cannot be answered with a concrete value, as protein powder is not a food supplement (we must get rid of the conception of protein powder as a supplement). Protein is a dairy food powder with a high protein content, that's all.

We recommend starting with 1 scoop of Evowhey per shake and increasing the amount as required.

So how many shakes can I have? As many as you need. It is a myth that protein powder is 'bad' or has any negative effects unlike other protein foods, so you can use it as a source of protein in your diet. If you want to meet most of your daily requirements by using protein powder because it is a cheaper option and/or because you prefer the taste, you can do so, have 2, 3, 4 or as many shakes as you like per day.

Do I need a shaker to prepare Evowhey?

Shakers are the best tool for making protein shakes, as protein powder is not a soluble cocoa that mixes easily as it forms lumps. It is necessary to further reduce the surface tension through mechanical mechanisms (such as shaking) to form a homogenous shake.

Can I mix Evowhey with other drinks besides water?

Evowhey Protein, like almost any other protein powder, is suitable for mixing into a variety of drinks, the most common being water, milk and plant-based drinks.

But it can also be mixed into juices, coffees or other preparations such as warm herbal teas. They are simply less common as protein flavours can be difficult to combine with drinks that have a distinct and characteristic taste, as the flavours mix, but making protein shakes with drinks other than water is completely valid.

Can I cook with Evowhey? Does protein lose quality if I heat it?

Protein powder is not subject to thermal damage from the temperatures associated with regular cooking. Therefore, preparing baked recipes such as sponge cakes or oatmeal pancakes with Evowhey is a common practice that does not adversely affect the nutritional or organoleptic quality of the protein to any degree.

As a tip, don't mix Evowhey into boiling hot drinks, as the immediate contrast with the very high temperature causes the protein to lose its ability to mix. If you want to use Evowhey in a very hot coffee, for example, mix it first with a small amount of water, milk or lukewarm coffee before adding it to the hot drink or mixture, so that it is fully integrated without difficulty.

What is the raw material of Evowhey Protein?

Fonterra and HSN have been working together for many years, as we import a lot of dairy protein raw material from Fonterra as a producer. Their animal care policies, guarantees of grass-based feeding of the cattle in most of their dairy products, and the overall quality of the livestock and product production process have made us fall in love with their proteins, which is why our whey concentrate and whey isolate raw materials are mainly Fonterra.

We have distribution agreements with the manufacturing plants of:

•  ROKISKIO SURIS AB (Lithuania).
•  The Lake District Creamery (UK).
•  Fonterra Europe Manufacturing B.V. (Netherlands).

At HSN, we control where we prefer the raw material to be shipped from, as even the same raw material from the same manufacturer in two different countries has slight nutritional and organoleptic differences (e.g. protein from Lithuania is fluffier, while protein from the Netherlands is a looser powder).

This is why the appearance of a protein is not a reliable factor in determining the quality of the protein, no matter how much we keep hearing that isolate should be a more airy and voluminous powder while concentrate is denser and looser. This is not always the case and is neither positively nor negatively related to their quality.

At HSN we manufacture a lot of Evowhey, Evolate 2.0, and other proteins, so we work with large volumes of ingredients for their manufacture, and of course, we handle many tons of protein raw material per order.

There is a possibility that in one of the orders, Fonterra may not be able to supply us with the amount of raw material we need, because the quantity requested is so large that it may not be able to supply the dairy cooperative. In these cases, HSN has verified other manufacturers of whey protein concentrate raw material that have been assessed and verified against Fonterra's raw material. In this way, raw material from alternative dairy producers has no nutritional or organoleptic differences to Fonterra's, and doesn't affect our manufacturing or the final result of Evowhey.

Evowhey Protein is usually made almost entirely from Fonterra's Whey Protein Concentrate 450, but when this is not possible, it is made from an equivalent raw material from European livestock.

Do flavours containing 'instant coffee' have caffeine?

The coffee added is not used for its coffee content, but for a purely organoleptic reason (smell, colour and taste).

Is Evowhey a good protein to use before bedtime?

Evowhey can be taken before bedtime without any problems.

However, as it is considered a fast-absorbing protein, it is more suitable for use throughout the day and around training.

HSN recommends casein if you are looking for a protein to take before bedtime.

Can I combine Evowhey with Creatine? And in the same shake?

Evowhey is fully compatible with creatine, on the same day and even in the same shake.

There are no negative interactions between the two products, and the use of creatine doesn't adversely affect the taste of the protein shake.

Do I need to combine Evowhey with other proteins or amino acids to make it better?

Evowhey Protein is a complete protein of high biological value and PDCAAs reference. It is therefore not necessary to add any amino acids or mix it with other different protein sources to improve it, as it cannot be improved in terms of its nutritional quality.

So... If I take protein, shouldn't I take amino acids?

Amino acids (especially EEA's and BCAA's) are a good tool to make up for protein intake, especially in people with digestion difficulties. When daily protein intake is sufficient, additional amino acid intake has no additional benefit in terms of muscle mass.

There are however, clear scientific studies that conclude that certain amino acids have specific effects, especially linked to sport, which are independent of the linkage of these compounds to the proteins they form, so the answer to this question is more complex:

You can use BCAA's, EAA's and other amino acids even if you take protein powder, as they will help you to supplement your diet and provide you with their specific nutritional properties.

Although mixing Evowhey Protein with other proteins isn't necessary, you can mix it with its unflavoured version (Whey Protein Concentrate 80%) if you're looking for a high-protein shake with a milder taste, or with other proteins such as caseins, which have a slower time-release to prepare a time-release protein with different digestion phases (fast and slow).

What is Evowhey's lecithin and why is it present?

Natural cow's whey protein powder is called 'normal'. This protein has a limited ability to mix with liquids, it is not suitable for making shakes. To overcome this, it is made instant by spraying lecithin spray onto the protein powder, something Fonterra already does in its raw material, it is not something we add.

Lecithin increases the hydrophilic profile of the protein powder, allowing it to better integrate with the liquid in the shake to form a homogenous mixture. Lecithin is a natural phospholipid-rich structure from plants that has no adverse effects or nutritional properties and is used as a blending agent for protein powders.

In fact, lecithin, in this case from soy and granulated, is marketed as a health food under our FoodSeries brand.

For the manufacture of Evowhey Protein, we use sunflower lecithin, not soy lecithin, so that our protein has no soy allergen in its composition. Sunflower lecithin offers the same properties as soy lecithin but without the allergen.

Why do you add sweeteners to Evowhey? Are sweeteners fattening or harmful?

We only use sucralose in the manufacturing process of Evowhey, as it is a sweetener with a very good taste that needs very little quantity. It is also completely suitable for diabetics and has no calories. It is the perfect sweetener and we do not need to use any other sweetener to make Evowhey.

Evowhey Protein contains no added sugars, and the sugar it does contain is the sugar naturally present in whey protein.
