Until recently, nothing had been documented on the fact that sport increases female sexual function.
Recent studies, however, show that practising sports increases sexual desire and promotes greater satisfaction in intimacy between couples, both for men and women.
Sport and Sexual Health
Sexual health is crucial to leading a full life.
Satisfying sex depends on a complex sequence of physiological, hormonal and psychological processes, which are linked to the well-being generated by the regular performance of sporting activities.
Practising sport has an effect on people’s physical and mental well-being.

It promotes healthy circulatory function, the respiratory system, body elasticity…
It also provides psychological benefits in terms of mood improvement, disposition to action, anti-stress…
How does sport improve female sexual function?
To the extent that our body-mind connection is strengthened with physical exercise, it results in progress at the level of all organic functions. Some evidence of the improvements that sport brings, in particular, to female sexual function is described below.
- It increases blood pressure, improving blood circulation in the body.
- It tones the pelvic floor muscles, supporting better orgasms, as well as prevention of sexual dysfunctions.
- It favours the release of substances that activate mechanisms to improve sexual health.
- Endorphins, which stimulate pleasure;
- Serotonin, which participates in regulating mood;
- Dopamine, which has a significant impact on feelings of relaxation and pleasure, as well as motivation and satisfaction.
- It improves the respiratory system, with the consequent increase in endurance during sexual activity.
- It helps burn calories.

Being in shape increases female self-esteem, as well as agility and flexibility and the ability to try new sexual positions.
Which sports enhance sexual health?
All sports disciplines lead to positive well-being.
However, for maximum enjoyment of sex, it’s important to identify the sports best suited to this end.
Yoga
The practice of yoga helps to reduce stress, generating a greater willingness to have sex
It also improves flexibility, so you can move more easily.
Pilates
Pilates helps strengthen the female pelvic floor, therefore ensuring your muscles are able to exert more pleasure.
It improves lubrication, arousal level, orgasms and sexual satisfaction.
Swimming
Swimming at least three times a week, for 30 minutes each time, increases sexual stamina.

Running is excellent for sexual health as it tones the muscles and promotes blood circulation.
It also releases endorphins, or happiness hormones.
Pole dancing
It teaches you how to move sensually.

Acrobatics on the vertical tube improve coordination and shape the figure.
Spinning, dancing and other aerobic activities
Aerobic exercise reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, which causes problems with lubricating and achieving orgasms.
Basketball and volleyball
These sports, like other, are of particular benefit to women as they increase blood circulation, with a resultant increase in blood flow to the clitoris, enhancing sexual function.
Studies on the subject
Omer Faruk Karatas conducted a study at Faith University, Ankara, Turkey, comparing female sexual function and clitoral blood flow between elite athletes and healthy, physically active women to assess the results of regular sport in the two groups.
According to the “Journal of Sexual Medicine”:
- The test was done with a group of 25 elite handball and volleyball players, aged between 20 and 45 years.
- The players had to have sex on a regular basis and practice sports regularly (minimum 2-3 hours a day).
- This group of women were compared with other healthy women, of similar ages, who practised sport for 2 hours per week.
- None of the elite athletes were taking testosterone or other anabolic hormones.
- They also did not have genitourinary, endocrine or vascular disease and had not had a child in the six months prior to the trial.
The researchers performed the Doppler test on the women who had participated in the trial and used a questionnaire to assess their sexual function; in addition to other aspects such as libido, lubrication, pleasure.
The study showed that regularly practising sports increases blood circulation in the clitoris.
Conclusions
We can conclude that regular sports practice increases sexual function and the ability to feel pleasure.
