- In the last week of February 2023, a new study was published on HSN caffeine, involving 20 endurance-trained athletes.
- HSN’s product has been chosen for its high purity and decided by the most renowned groups of medicine, health sciences and sports nutrition in the field of scientific research at the Spanish Universities of Seville and Alcalá.
- Caffeine can improve concentration and alertness, as well as athletic performance, not only by reducing perceived exertion, but also by enhancing short-term, high-intensity energy metabolism.
- This study demonstrates how top quality caffeine, such as HSN’s, is an ergogenic aid that has important positive implications for sports performance in people who are used to practising strength, endurance and load-power disciplines.
Objectives and characteristics of the study
The aims of the study were to examine the acute effects of caffeine intake on upper and lower limb strength, power and muscular endurance at different loads in trained athletes..
The researchers previously hypothesised that:
“”…caffeine consumption would increase muscular strength, power and endurance at moderate loading intensities regardless of which limbs were involved in the exercise…”
What was the HSN caffeine supplementation protocol?
The study design consisted of a double-blind, crossover, randomised, placebo-controlled experiment.
At the first visit participants were assessed regarding their dietary and physical activity habits, and received an evaluation of their body composition and strength by 1-RM test.
At the next two visits, separated by at least 72 hours to ensure sufficient recovery between sessions, athletes consumed 3mg/kg of caffeine on one occasion, and 3mg/kg of placebo on the other. Both drinks were equivalent in taste, supplied in the same type of opaque bottle so that neither the researchers nor the sample of users investigated knew what they were consuming (double-blind).
Exercise began after 60 minutes of administering the drink.
Evaluations of power and strength measured by barbell displacement speed with a linear encoder on a Multipower machine were carried out in back squat and bench press exercises. An experimental protocol of incremental load was applied at 25, 50, 75 and 90% of the 1RM. With 3 minutes rest between sets.
Muscular endurance was assessed by asking subjects to complete a set at 65% and 85% of 1RM doing as many repetitions as possible to total muscle failure, with 5 minutes rest between trials.
Thirdly, isometric strength was assessed through the use of a manual dynamometer and a mid-thigh range “pull-portable” test.
Finally, Vertical Jumping was assessed by means of SJ and CMJ tests on a force platform.

Study results
- The study showed several results demonstrating positive interactions (i.e. good effectiveness) in the amount of force developed and, thus in the maximum and average barbell velocity, especially in the back squat.
- The effect of caffeine was also noted on muscular endurance and peak force, contributing to the completion of more repetitions, at the different loads tested.
- Caffeine also generated a significant improvement in isometric strength performance, however, no clear differences were observed in vertical jump performance, either in the height attained or the amount of force generated.
Conclusions
After statistical analysis of the data obtained, the authors concluded that:
- Intake of 3mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight improved strength, power and muscular endurance in trained athletes.
- Data analysis showed that these performance improvements are more evident and pronounced at high loads (≥ 75% 1RM) and more noticeable in lower body than in upper body exercises.
- In trained athletes, both men and women, accustomed to caffeine consumption, its evident and positive ergogenic effects are mainly influenced by the load and size of the selected muscle group.
- The researchers chose the highest purity caffeine for their study, as it has to meet clear and specific quality criteria.
