Ubiquinol (Kaneka Ubiquinol™) 100mg by EssentialSeries is a food supplement in vegetable softgels based on ubiquinol, the 'reduced form of coenzyme Q10' with raw material: Kaneka Ubiquinol™.

Ubiquinol is an electron-rich (reduced) form of coenzyme Q (ubiquinone). Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is found in three redox states: fully oxidised (ubiquinone), partially reduced (semiquinone or ubisemiquinone), and fully reduced (ubiquinol).

The redox functions of ubiquinol are based on the ability to exchange two electrons in a redox cycle between the ubiquinol (reduced) and ubiquinone (oxidised) form, which is why ubiquinol is considered the best active form of coenzyme Q10.

Ubiquinol vs Coenzyme Q10 (Ubiquinone) - What is the difference?

As mentioned above, Ubiquinol is the reduced form of coenzyme Q10, commonly referred to as the oxidised form of Ubiquinone.

Many people use Coenzyme Q10 but are unaware that Ubiquinol is also Coenzyme Q10, just in a reduced version that is considered preferable.

The disadvantage of traditional coenzyme Q10 is that once ingested, our body needs to transform it before it can be used: It converts it into ubiquinol.

The ability to turn Ubiquinone (traditional Coenzyme Q10) into Ubiquinol decreases over time and during ageing. Any coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) that is not converted is not active.

For this reason, direct consumption of Ubiquinol is most desirable, as it is the only form of fat-soluble antioxidant naturally present in our bodies.

According to Kaneka's data, Ubiquinol is 2 to 4 times better absorbed than ubiquinone.

Foods rich in Ubiquinol and Ubiquinone. What are they and how much do they contribute?

You can find varying amounts of ubiquinol in different types of food. However, its content is quite low, so the use of a ubiquinol food supplement is often recommended as an ideal way to supplement:

Oily fish provide a good amount of Coenzyme Q10, especially salmon, tuna, and sardines. Beef, chicken, and pork also provide ubiquinol, especially if they have been fed on quality grass; more specifically, the viscera are rich in this compound, particularly the heart.

However, the content of these ubiquinol-rich products, such as beef liver, is only 4mg per 100g. This means that to obtain the 100mg of ubiquinol provided by a convenient HSN softgel, more than 2.5kg of beef liver is needed, which is not only impractical but also unfeasible daily.

Why use Ubiquinol together with Red Yeast Rice? Other interesting combinations

Red yeast rice contains naturally occurring compounds called monacolins, of which monacolin K is the most important.

Monacolin K is responsible for the physiological effects of red yeast rice. Nonetheless, according to clinical studies, its properties act on the mevalonate pathway, which adversely affects the ability to produce coenzyme Q10.
