L-Arginine: Does it produce Nitric Oxide for hypertrophy?

You have surely heard of L-arginine in terms of being an amino acid involved in muscle growth. We can also tell you that it is a non-essential amino acid and, therefore, can be synthesised by your body, as it is found in a high percentage of the proteins you consume every day. By understanding the mechanism through which it is converted into nitric oxide, you will be able to assess its role in muscle hypertrophy. Despite this, it is not stored in the body; instead, it is created exactly when it is needed. And this is where L-arginine comes into play, as supplementation with it should become your daily ally.

Based on the fact that its production requires situations triggered by strong and metabolically stressful stimuli, such as low temperatures or intense exercise, there is nothing like performing high-intensity exercise (HIT) to increase its concentration safely.

And why high intensity? Because there is no certainty that moderate exercise also has an impact on increasing its blood levels.

    You can clearly observe this effect in a study carried out with rats, in which four groups were created: a Control C group, which remained at rest, and three other groups forced to run on a treadmill with a downward slope, simulating eccentric exercise. Of these last three groups, one took nothing (R), another took L-arginine (RA) and the last took L-arginine + another supplement (RN).

    The result after measurement? The group that obtained the greatest fibre rupture was the one that took nothing, and the one that took L-arginine alone was the one that obtained the least fibre rupture, practically reaching the levels of the resting group.

    • It helps muscle regeneration, as it facilitates and speeds up post-workout recovery, being a powerful stimulator of cell division. In this way, it promotes muscle hypertrophy.
