Why add black pepper to turmeric?
Black pepper is added to turmeric because it contains piperine, a compound that significantly supports the absorption of curcuminoids, including curcumin itself. Curcuminoids have low bioavailability due to rapid metabolism and poor intestinal absorption. Piperine inhibits certain hepatic enzymes responsible for breaking down turmeric, facilitating its absorption by up to 2,000% (Hatab et al., 2019). This combination supports turmeric’s effects.
