Magnolia officinalis has a long history in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that goes back more than 2,000 years. In ancient China, this tree was primarily valued for its bark, which was harvested and dried for decoctions. According to ancient texts, it was used for various purposes, common practice during the Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD), when it was recommended as part of herbal formulas to balance the body’s 'Qi,' in line with their spiritual and moral beliefs. Over time, it became an essential component in many traditional herbal formulas.

With the spread of TCM to the rest of Asia and later the Western world, Magnolia officinalis continued to be recognised. In later centuries, this plant was mentioned in several major botanical treatises, such as the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing, a classic of Chinese herbal literature. During the Ming dynasty, magnolia bark was included in more recipes for various purposes. As a natural compound, its use remained limited, but it slowly grew in popularity outside of China.

More recently, particularly since the 20th century with the rising interest in natural compounds rich in phytochemicals in the Western world, Magnolia officinalis has been reintroduced as a dietary supplement, typically as an extract. Thanks to scientific advancements, the plant’s active compounds have been identified (mainly Honokiol and Magnolol), which allowed for their better characterisation, and it has been especially used in the United States and Europe.

Why is the bark the only part mentioned?
