Evening primrose (Oenothera biennis) is a plant that is characterised by aggressive cultivation conditions, as its harvesting involves many economic benefits due to the important market for the processing of its seeds for animal fodder and for obtaining oil.

At HSN we select only the best raw materials for our products, and this includes not only choosing the best species, varieties, and seed units of evening primrose but also ensuring a sustainable cultivation and harvesting process to obtain traditionally treated raw seeds.

The cultivation procedures followed respect the growth cycle of the plant, which is grown at the stationary point of development where, according to scientific research in the field of botany, the seeds naturally have the highest gamma-linolenic acid content.

The seeds are harvested following traditional harvesting methods, and the seeds are processed according to the best international standards of care so as not to degrade any of their natural bioactives until they reach the oil extraction plant.

Use of traditional means to obtain it through first cold pressing

Evening primrose naturally provides a wide variety of fatty acids in its seeds:

These include linoleic acid (cis-linoleic acid, omega-6) (65-80%), gamma-linolenic acid (cis-γ-linolenic acids) (8-14%), oleic acid (6-11%), palmitic acid (7-10%) and stearic acid (1.5-3.5%). Other components include sterols and triterpene alcohols.

Of all, gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is the most valued for its uniqueness, not being present in many options on the market but being very rich in evening primrose.

Unfortunately, the treatment of evening primrose seed by many manufacturers is inadequate, as they roast the seeds to obtain the oil more quickly, but this is highly detrimental to the health of its fatty acids, especially GLA, which degrades quickly and easily.
