Cranberry (20:1) extract 500mg by EssentialSeries is a food supplement in vegetable capsules made from 20 times more concentrated extract of the berries of the plant Vaccinium macrocarpon L., standardised to 10% proanthocyanidins.

Cranberry extract is made from numerous fragments of the exocarp with achromatic cell walls and violet berry contents; the thin lamina parenchyma of the mesocarp; the thickened, pitted cells of the testa and oil droplets from the berries (Upton et al., 2002 cited in World Health Organization, 2009).

Characteristics of cranberries

Cranberry extract is nothing more than a concentrated version of the natural berries of Vaccinium macrocarpon L. which contain:

•  Organic acids (e.g. citric and quinic acids predominate),
•  Phenolic acids (e.g. chlorogenic and p-coumaric acids).

The fruits contain up to 10% tannins (mostly catechol tannins). The main flavonoids are myricetin and quercetin glycosides.

Also of interest are proantocianidinas (ondensed tannins) consisting of oligomers of 2 flavan-3ols. Mainly epicatechin with small amounts of epigallocatechin.
