Drinking while you eat can be bad

Normally, we drink and eat at the same time, but is this really healthy?

Can having lunch or dinner with liquids be harmful?

Drinking liquids during meals, like lunch or dinner, isn’t harmful in most cases, but there are some things to keep in mind, especially if you have certain digestive or health conditions:

  • Dilution of gastric juices: Drinking large amounts of liquid during meals can dilute digestive juices, which might affect food digestion, especially proteins. However, for most people, this dilution doesn’t significantly impact digestion.
  • Feeling bloated: Drinking liquids, especially sodas or carbonated drinks, during meals can cause bloating or stomach discomfort. This can be more noticeable in people with digestive issues like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or frequent bloating.
  • Higher calorie intake: If the liquids you drink are high in calories (like soft drinks, sugary juices, or alcohol), it can increase your calorie intake without you realizing it, which could contribute to weight gain over time.
  • Appetite control: Some people find that drinking a bit of water before or during meals helps them feel fuller and better control portions. On the flip side, drinking too much liquid might make you eat faster and not chew properly, which can affect digestion.

For people with digestive problems or those who suffer from reflux or SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), drinking large amounts of liquids during meals might worsen symptoms. If you have any of these conditions, it’s best to moderate how much liquid you drink while eating.
