Moisturising creams for the face

The best way to keep your skin hydrated is to drink water or natural juices and to eat a lot of fruit. This is known as oral hydration.

Our second tool we can use is cosmetics: by combining water intake with hydrating cosmetics, we’ll ensure our skin has the optimal levels of hydration it so badly needs. If it’s just a percentage below its needs, the skin loses its quality and weakens, which makes us look older than we really are.

What ingredients do moisturisers contain?

Dermatologists’ associations have listed the six essential components of a skin moisturiser as:

Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of the cream

A number that indicates how long the cream-protected skin can be exposed without burning under ultraviolet radiation.

If it takes ten minutes for a person’s skin to burn, and they use a sunscreen and moisturiser for dry skin with an SPF of 15, they’ll be protected for 150 minutes (10×15).

“Using a moisturises with a protective factor of 30 or higher each morning further delays the signs of skin ageing and reduces the chances of developing diseases”, experts say.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants should be applied immediately after cleansing the skin so that they’re better absorbed through the moisturising facial cream.

Their main role in skin care is to neutralise the damage that free radicals have on your skin.

They’re formed in many processes of the body, for example by metabolism or by the immune system to attack viruses and bacteria, but also by environmental factors, such as ultraviolet rays from the sun and pollution. They plat a role in ageing and loss of skin beauty.

Retinol

Retinol belongs to the retinoid family, the derivatives of vitamin A, and is often applied in cosmetics for its skin-enhancing effects.

It helps to remove dark spots and expression lines.

Moisturising creams for face

It’s advisable to start applying it to the skin avoiding the summer months, when it is more lacking in moisturiser, once or twice a week, at night, and you can gradually increase the dose until you use it daily without risks.

AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids)

These prevent further accumulation of dead skin cells on the face, so they function primarily as an exfoliating cream.

They also brighten the face.

Environmental factors and stress, as well as the sun, slow down the rate of cell turnover or rejuvenation of facial skin.

Peptides

Collagen is a protein molecule secreted by connective tissue cells.

It’s the most abundant component of skin and bones.

Hyaluronic Acid

This is a moisturiser, offering essential hydration for the face.

There are a number of products on the market designed specifically for the care of each type of skin.

However, here are some home-made preparations that you can incorporate into your facial care routine:

In a bowl, mix a tablespoon of olive oil, a tablespoon of sugar, and the juice from a lemon.

  • Apply the preparation to your face and lips.
  • Leave this mask on for 15 minutes, enough time for your complexion to absorb the nutrients, and then remove with warm water.
  • This will serve as a natural scrub.

Combine a tablespoon of honey with a tablespoon of oats, flaked or ground, and the juice of a lemon.

  • Apply to face and leave on for about 20 minutes.
  • Remove with warm water.
  • This mask is ideal for dry skin hydration.

In a cup of hot water, add 6 tablespoons of grated orange peel.

  • Leave it for 24 hours.
  • Apply all over the face. It’ll tone your skin, leaving it soft and shiny.

What’s the best time of day to take care of your face?

  • Wash your face before going to bed: it’s absolutely essential to remove those impurities we talked about before going to sleep.
There are inexpensive glycerine gels, lotions and soaps that are perfect for this purpose and avoid the irritation often caused by traditional soaps.
  • Apply a moisturising cream: in cleansing our face, we not only remove the dirt that accumulates during the day, but also prepare our skin so that the cream that we apply next is more effective.
We don’t need to have the most miraculous cream in the shop. Remember, the important thing is to hydrate our skin.

When you get up

The second important time to pay attention to facial care is when we wake up.

During the night, the skin is at rest and calm, meaning in the morning we have to prepare it for the changes in temperature and humidity we’ll experience throughout the day.

  • Wash your face with cold water: it’ll help to decongest the face (eyes, bags, dark circles…) and at the same time close the pores and prevent some of the impurities and dirt from entering.
