The history of bodybuilding has left behind a long list of athletes who paved the way and became role models, both for their physical performance and their perseverance and professionalism. Jay Cutler, Franco Columbu, Lou Ferrigno are some of the most outstanding names in our discipline. Below, we list, besides the ones just mentioned, other bodybuilders worthy of being remembered.
STEVE REEVES
Height: 1.85 m.
Weight: 95 kg.
This WWII veteran retired from bodybuilding at 24 after a brilliant career that earned him none other than Mr. America, Mr. World, and Mr. Universe titles. Like Arnold, besides becoming one of the most respected bodybuilders worldwide, Steve Reeves also made a successful jump into the film world.
DORIAN YATES
Height: 1.78 m.
Weight: 118 kg.
This English bodybuilder won Mr. Olympia 6 times in a row, from 1992 to 1997. He’s remembered not only for his 118 kilos of pure muscle but also for starting out as a skinny, lanky kid. A fan of high-intensity training (HIT), his career ended in 1997 due to a severe triceps tear. By the time he retired, he had racked up 15 wins and 2 runner-ups.
ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER
Height: 1.88 m.
Weight: 108 kg.
Arnold Schwarzenegger is one of the most important bodybuilders in the history of our sport. So much so, his legacy lives on in the Arnold Classic, an annual bodybuilding competition that every year brings together the world’s top pros in Columbus.
His career is amazing. Born in Austria, he moved to the US at 21 and started training at the Gold’s Gym in Santa Monica under Joe Weider’s guidance. Two years later, at just 23, he won his first of seven Mr. Olympia titles in New York, becoming the youngest bodybuilder to achieve this feat (a record he still holds). His pro bodybuilding titles include the junior European championship in 1965 and the absolute European championship in 1966. He won Mr. Universe five times (the first at 20 years old) and Mr. Olympia seven times, a record that stood until Lee Haney won his eighth straight.
As if that wasn’t enough, throughout his life he also conquered the tough Hollywood film industry and served two terms as governor of California. While there have been bodybuilders with more wins and even greater muscularity, “The Austrian Oak” is always fondly remembered as a symbol of perseverance and grit.
RONNIE COLEMAN
Height: 1.80 m.
Weight: 130 kg.
Ronnie Coleman – a graduate in accounting from the University of Louisiana – is currently considered one of the most important icons in bodybuilding. This American won the Mr. Olympia title for 8 consecutive years, breaking all previous records for body weight. Besides this major competition, he has earned numerous other awards, totaling 29 thanks to his herculean size. His massive back has always been admired, as well as his arms, which – it’s said – comfortably exceeded 50 cms. Now retired from competition, he dedicates himself to worldwide exhibitions and seminars, as well as promoting his supplement brand “Ronnie Coleman Signature Series.”
LEE HANEY
Height: 1.80 m.
Weight: 110 kg.
Before Ronnie Coleman, this American bodybuilder set his own record with 8 consecutive Mr. Olympia titles (from 1984 to 1991), being the first to beat Schwarzenegger’s 7-title record. With an incredible 110 kilos, Lee Haney maintained a muscle mass index close to 34. Besides being one of the best bodybuilders ever, Haney stands out for being an excellent human being, having contributed to countless charities (most notably: founding a shelter for children in Georgia).
