Being honest, having confidence in ourselves and following our instincts can be considered among the most difficult tasks that any human being has the obligation to accomplish daily, especially considering that these are the ones that strengthen willpower.
What is Willpower?
Willpower is the refusal to give in to impulse or immediate needs that arises within a person, with the main purpose of satisfying a short-term goal.

This means staying strong and striving for a result, despite the obstacles and difficulties that may come your way.
In other words, it can be considered as the decision and confidence that each person has within him or herself from the moment he or she sets out to achieve a goal, be it a challenge, an objective or a desire.
How do you know if you have willpower?
Willpower is natural and innate, it has its own important place and space in life and within each person, so its existence should never be questioned.

However, it is the role it is given on a day-to-day basis and its relevance in decision-making that is under discussion.
This is because it is seen as a kind of commitment to oneself, which responds to one’s conscience and respect for one’s position, to the last consequence.
Importance of willpower
Having will means being in control of emotions and actions.
Not letting an impulse change the direction of a decision already taken, regulating it in a conscious way.
The relevance of having a healthy, strong and regal Willpower is usually directly related to success, because in order to progress in any area, difficult decisions must be made and difficult obstacles, physical and emotional, must be overcome.
This will be impossible to achieve, however, without the inner strength to see beyond the present.

A person with a strong willpower, will maintain his or her position, regardless of the fact that the people around them do not share the same idea.
As a perfect example:
You can take a person addicted to alcohol, who despite difficulties and temptation, is able to stay sober and away from any kind of narcotic substance.
Tips for working on Willpower
As explained above, willpower must be worked on, strengthened and guarded on a daily basis.
Nevertheless, this will be impossible if two related aspects, self-esteem and motivation, are not toned up as well.
Self-esteem
Willpower is directly related to one’s self-perception. Strengthening one’s self-image, not only physically, but also emotionally and psychologically, is therefore of utmost importance in order to be confident after a decision has been made.
The drive you need to have will be directly affected by the self-assessment you do.
A person who is not able to accept himself/herself will not be able to accept the possibility of making mistakes and will find it difficult to overcome failures.

Instead, with a good self-esteem, confidence will fuel you to move forward and trust your instincts.
Some recommendations that can be offered to work on self-esteem and willpower are:
- Make lists of aspects of ourselves that are considered positive.
- Explicitly congratulate yourself when you do something particularly positive.
- Ban or remove unpleasant words from our vocabulary when we refer to ourselves.
- Test yourself when you feel confident, putting yourself in situations that can shake your will, and win.
Motivation
Focusing on goals that are especially positive and attractive will make the reward even sweeter, which is important, because enthusiasm offers a new vision and perspective when it comes to meeting a goal.
For this type of situation, it is always recommended that more than one motivation is sought, choosing particular short-term and long-term goals.

Setting a specific and clear goal, writing it down and regularly checking the progress you are making is highly recommended.
Using finishing a class with a certain grade as motivation means scheduling study hours that must be completed despite distractions that may arise.
Exercises for working on willpower
Divide tasks and attention into more than a single objective, setting goals for different timeframes, short, medium and long term.
Do not try to do more than you are prepared to do.
That is, not to focus on sports and arts at the same time, for example, but to choose a global goal because productivity will decrease, self-esteem will be damaged and you will be exhausted, not having achieved half of what you wanted to achieve.
Test your limits
Exposing yourself to certain situations that may be tempting means that with enough practice, you can work your way up through the levels and work on your strength and endurance.
By exposing oneself, it will be easier to get to know those tricks and tools that can help distract the mind.

Whether through exercise, relaxation activities or even physically removing yourself from the situation.
Always choose to have a partner
Sharing experiences and having support for the most difficult moments means that this person will not only be there when you need him or her most but will be a partner in change.
In case of falling and stumbling, do not be extremely hard on yourself.
The will can be seen as a muscle that needs to be worked and exercised, but which does not always work properly and can become sore and can be damaged.
