Flax is a well-known plant in the food industry because its seeds are very rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). They are used as food by adding them to many recipes and preparations such as yoghurts, for example, but the oil is also extracted for cooking, especially for raw use as it is not suitable for heating.

This powdered format is perfect for nutritionally enriching a multitude of recipes, with the advantages of optimal conservation of the oil, the absence of degradation, and the fact that it has no taste.

The treatment of flax is delicate, because given its high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids, if it is heated or treated with acidic means (a very common practice in the supplementation industry to obtain the cheapest possible raw material), it spoils.

In order to obtain truly high-quality flaxseed oil, it is necessary to take into account that mechanical pressing treatment, that is, the treatment that crushes the flaxseed so that it naturally releases its oil, together with processing conditions based on a cold environment, is ideal.

Many companies do not ensure this, as it implies a financial and resource cost related to the effort and care of the plant that they are not willing to assume.

At HSN we only use the best possible raw materials, which is why we ensure that our flaxseed oil comes from the first pressing of the whole flaxseed, in a cold environment, without any heating treatment.

Cold temperature microencapsulation treatment. No degradation

Another delicate stage in the processing of powdered oils is the conversion from oil to powder.

For this, many companies use oil capturing agents and spray drying, preparing a kind of freeze-drying. This is terrible for the oil as it makes its omega-3 content significantly peroxide and ends up having more problems than benefits in terms of its use as a functional food.

At HSN we microencapsulate the oil, that is, we do not alter it, we fractionate the oil into microdroplets that are coated in small particles, so that inside each one of them is the original oil, with all its properties.

Unlike other manufacturers, our microencapsulation system is carried out in the oil treatment plant, in temperature-controlled rooms, following procedures that do not increase the temperature and therefore do not negatively affect its positive properties.

The properties of flaxseed oil derive from its fatty acid composition:

Flaxseed oil powder can be used for emulsions, it is suitable for the preparation of fat-based sauces as it mixes better than normal oils, as is the case for the preparation of vinaigrettes, for example.

Even so, one of the most common uses is its raw use in soups, creamy soups, and purées.

You only need to add a heaped tablespoon on top of a serving to provide a significant amount of essential fatty acids.
