Eco-friendly and endangered species committed
Meridian does not use palm oil in any of its products. Many brands specialised in peanut butter production use palm oil like an emulsifier. Manufacturers eliminate natural oils, rich in nut and seed nutrients and replaces them with palm oil.
Massive production of oil palm has been mentioned by some environmentalist groups as threat for orangutans and other primate species that live in the tropical rain-forest of Indonesia. The environmental impact of these plantations is devastating, including deforestation, the loss of many endangered species habitat and the significant increase of greenhouse gas emissions.
Meridian is proud to support Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS), a foundation that is currently hosting and rehabilitating around 800 orphan orangutans that have been displaced from their home, due to the palm oil production.
In fact, 8 orphan orangutans have been adopted, which means that they are in charge of the rehabilitation costs until they can be freed in a natural habitat.
BOS foundation is focused on preserving, rescuing, rehabilitation and reinsertion of Borneo orangutans in two of its rehabilitation centres. BOS ensures a safe and natural habitat and has initiated a reinsertion programme in the wild.
