What is Inulin?

Inulin is a fructan with a linear and long chain structure. A fructan is a compound that is made up of fructose units that are bound together through links with a configuration that prevents its breakdown in the stomach.
That is why inulin is a type of “indigestible” carbohydrate that reaches the intestine intact. There, it is fermented and it starts to change the composition and activity of the bacterial flora in the bowel. Consequently, it provides a beneficial effect in the bowel (Carlson et al., 2018).

Moreover, inulin is sweet, but not too much. It is 3 times less sweet than sugar, but this is also another reason why it is used to replace sugar in recipes. It allows you to use less sugar, keeping all the flavor and texture but with a much lower calorie content.

Improving the intestinal health
Thanks to its prebiotic effects and its structure, inulin can go through the stomach and bowel without being broken down by their enzymes. When it goes through the superior gastrointestinal tract, it starts to be fermented in the bowel, feeding the beneficial bacteria (specially bifidobacteria) that live in it.
It also reduces the accumulation of harmful microflora and improves the integrity of the lymphatic tissues related to the mucosa, which are in charge of protecting us (as a physical barrier) against pathogens and toxins.
Having a good intestinal health and microbiota is important, since altering their balance has been associated with countless metabolic pathologies, such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes, chronic inflammation, immunosuppression (Rinnincella et al., 2019).
Improving the intestinal transit
Like other fibers, inulin reaches the bowel, where it produces a laxative effect, increasing the increasing and softening the stool bulk. In addition, it increases the frequency and shortens the intestinal transit.
This effect will be truly beneficial for those who suffer constipation problems due to a lack of stool bulk.
Apart from this, inulin can improve the lipid metabolism, hindering the absorption of fat after the meals, controlling the glycemia, slowing down the absorption rate of carbohydrates (Asmed and Rashid, 2019), improving the absorption of calcium and other minerals, lowering the risk of suffering allergies and improving the immune system and reducing the intestinal permeability (Carlson et al., 2018).
All these properties make of inulin a great substitute for sugar and fat, with beneficial properties for people who suffer diabetes, obesity or intestinal transit problems or leaky gut syndrome that does not involve SIBO.
How to take Inulin
Add half a scoop of inulin (3g) to your recipes, juices or shakes in order to benefit from their effects.
