What is Malic Acid?
Malic acid is a dicarboxylic acid by HSNraw deprotonated in malate, a fundamental metabolite for a proper energy production in the organism. In fact, a deficiency can condition our performance and trigger symptoms of fatigue in our day to day.
It is a chelating agent of metals and it is used in the food industry as an acidulant.
Why take Malic Acid?
Malic acid has several uses, both for food technology as well as in general and sports nutrition. The main ones are:
First of all, the most common use of malic acid is as an acidulant in the food industry. Many take advantage of this feature in order to counter the excessively sweet taste of other food supplements. A serving of malic acid is more than enough to counter the sweet taste and add an acid touch of flavor to any product.
The food industry uses tons of malic acid in order to simulate the malic acid content that is naturally present in fruit and vegetables. Moreover, it is used in canned fruit products as a preservative.
For the mouth
Malic acid has sialagogue properties when it is taken orally. In fact, it can help us deal with xerostomy (or dry mouth syndrome) which can be caused by some antidepressants, beta-blockers or conditions such as anxiety. Using malic acid significantly increased the saliva flow in patients with dry mouth due to the use of antidepressants (Gómez-Moreno et al., 2013)
In addition, malic acid is taken orally in order to reduce the residual layer that cover the dentin during a dental treatment thanks to its chelating properties. Moreover, it removes the adhered calcium, microorganisms and metals stuck in the tooth enamel (Cruz-Filho et al., 2011)
At a biochemical level, the body creates malate by eliminating two hydroxyl groups from a malic acid molecule. This element is an intermediary in the carboxylic acid cycle, which is an indispensable process to produce energy from nutrients through the oxidative metabolism (oxygen dependant). Having a low malate concentration in the cell mitochondria will 'slow down' the energy production process, since the body has to synthesize it from other substances. Therefore, our body cannot continue the cycle without malate and it will not be possible to produce energy.
Malate is a key energy intermediary for the ATP production (adenosine triphosphate), which is the energy transfer molecule that our body uses to carry out any metabolic process.
How to take Malic Acid
If you want to benefit from the nutritional properties of malic acid, mix 800mg in 200ml of water and drink it once a day.
If you want to benefit from the alimentary effects of malic acid, use a serving (or less) to acidify a product as much as you want.
